President Lincoln quoted in his great speech straight out of the Bible when he said, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” (Mark 3:25). No matter how long we might be married (or together), or what we do for a living, many of us today feel like the very structure of our mental, emotional, and relational house is absolutely crumbling down around us.
As you well know, there are hundreds of potential landmines, quicksand pits, roadside bombs, and nuclear warheads that come against each of us and our relationships each and every day. You say, how in the world are we supposed to guard against it all? Great question. And I’m not so silly as to offer some quick and easy answer. Life is simply way too complex for that. We are all so very different in our make-up, responsiveness, temperament, backgrounds and ways of thinking and feeling.
Sometimes it takes discernment
It truly takes extreme discernment to not be presumptuous, pre-judgemental, and clear minded with deeper-level focus. It’s just a really good thing that we were created by someone who really knows us, loves us, and truly has the answers. It was said, “…in the multitude of counselors, there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14). Of course, there is also great confusion if you go looking in the wrong direction. Sorry, no easy answer here. But for the discerning, there are real life answers, for sure.

Check out this 2,000 year-old word of encouragement, straight from The Message Bible, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30).
