Professional Relationship Coaching
For quite some time now, couples have been going to see a counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, pastor or professional relationship coaching to “fix” the other person. Well sure, you know you’ve got a part to play in the problem, but come on…isn’t it mostly the other person’s fault? Got you! Here’s the deal…you don’t really want to spend all that money and actually waste your time, right?
Okay, then here’s what you want to do. Where ever you wind up going for some serious help with your relationship problems or any of the myriad of ways a professional life coach can help, be sure you do your research and ask the right questions before ever laying out a penny!
Check to be sure the person you are going to see is genuinely certified by an actual coaching board that espouses your philosophy, world view, and overall orientation. Also, check out the person’s biography, LinkedIn profile, and Facebook presence. It doesn’t hurt to Google them and ask a friend or two for their opinion, as long as they’re confidential! Request a free consult up front (typically over the phone), to ask them directly any and all questions you can think of. Trust me, if they are any professional whatsoever, they’ll be glad to handle even your toughest concerns.
Feel free to ask any and all of your questions
Some of these questions should initially cover fees, how paid (credit/debit card, insurance, or Health Savings Account), schedule availability, or how they view _______. They should be free to also answer how long have they been in practice, how would they handle __________, do you have to be locked into a contract, can you pay ahead, and what are their typical processes, especially what would a likely session sound like given your particular goals. You should definitely ask about their specialties or niches. Most professional life coaches try to narrow their focus down to a handful of specialties, but if they are very experienced, be prepared for them to truly be quite knowledgeable in various areas.
Your main agenda in going for help is to come up with your own goals even within the first couple of sessions. Don’t worry if you can’t do so ahead of time; that is what they are there to help you do. A good life coach will know the right questions to ask, so as to pull your goals out of you so they can come alongside you and submit to them…holding you accountable in a very respectful and encouraging manner.
In Relationship Coaching, it definitely has greater complexity than the typical individual coaching session. You will want a more experienced coach who truly knows what they are doing to be able to make good use of your time. Of course, it is extremely normal to be hurting, frustrated, confused, maybe extremely angry, or feeling totally helpless and/or hopeless. A lot of folks honestly wait until it’s almost too late before attempting help. We in America are a very independent, self-made, can-handle-it sort.
Nevertheless, it’s the Professional Life Coach’s job to help you sort out where to start, what to think, and how to go about the whole process. After visiting with over 2,000 folks in 25 years, one thing I can say is…if you are truly hungry to go for it, no matter what, and are willing to ‘refuse to settle for less’, you WILL be able to dream again and get the answers you’ve only been able to dream about!
